Perriams Pacesetter — 03 August 2026

Blog 3rd August 2026

Every Monday we post some thoughts in our Perriams Pacesetter, containing fresh thoughts for the week, the weekend just gone, and a bit of left field. Click below to read.

GEM

Zoe Hobbs winning gold in the 100 metres at Glasgow, who else?

TOPICAL

The Commonwealth Games are over and New Zealand went away with a total medal haul of 36, so we have to be pretty pleased with that. Some great PB’s by our athletes and the golden girl of the 100 metres Zoe Hobbs has to take our “GR” greatest result.

GONEBURGER!

The dogs (Greyhounds) had their last day at Addington on Saturday.

OPINION

Should Ardie Savea be travelling with the team as they leave for South Africa? A: I’ll never answer that, of course. How did the NZRFU let him away with this? He chose to play 18 months of rugby and filled his pockets with Yen.

SPOTLIGHT

New Zealand’s offer of $45,000 for 3 kids. The cost of raising a child from birth to 18 years old is estimated to sit around $280,000 to $300,000. 3 kids, that could be upwards of $900,000. Winston, $5,000 a pop we are not sure will do the trick here. That wont even cover the power increases!

OF INTEREST

Mortgage rates look to be on the rise so if you have not already done so then now is the time to fix.

SPORTIFY

Does County Mayo’s success in Gaelic football and breaking the 75-year curse give a few teams in the NPC hope?

England, the home of cricket and where cricket was founded, yet they can’t find any decent coaches. New Zealand’s answer to heat pumps, Stephen Fleming has just secured the position as coach of their Test team whilst Brendan McCullum holds onto one dayer’s and 20-20.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK?

Would you rather have lived in the era of smart phones or before they were unleashed?

THE MARKETS

The New Zealand housing market is currently going through the longest and deepest downturn in the last 30 to 40 years, property firm Cotality says based on their data. They also say that investor activity is very subdued. It begs the question, if there is a change of government and a capital gains tax is introduced where where’s the tax come from if there’s no capital gain?

Morningstar’s latest KiwiSaver survey is out and shows a range of returns across the providers. One stands out, which returned nearly 100% over the latest 12 months. Kernel’s Clean Energy fund returned 98.4% over the last 12 months – lucky for some 😊.

OCR 2.5% ↑ July 2026 CPI 4.1% ↑ June 2026 Unemployment 5.3% ↓ March 2026 House Price Movement 2.3% ↑ July 2024 Rent Price Movement 4.3% ↑ July 2024

PERRIAMS POWER RANKINGS – 03 August 2026

Each week we announce Perriams power rankings for the week.

Zoe Hobbs the first New Zealander, male or female to win a Commonwealth Games gold in the 100 metres. Aotearoa finally has some fast twitch fibres.

Eliza McCartney takes gold in the pole vault, but the reason for her slotting here at #2 is because of that smile, that’s gold every day of the week.

Tori Moorby claims silver in the javelin. Tori is all the way from Gore and she gets our vote for the 3rd because when she was younger, she couldn’t afford javelin spike shoes, so she wore rugby boots at training 😊.
