Perriams Pacesetter – 18 May 2026

Blog 18th May 2026

Every Monday we post some thoughts in our Perriams Pacesetter, containing fresh thoughts for the week, the weekend just gone, and a bit of left field. Click below to read.

OF INTEREST

Stats NZ

We read about it and live the pain at the pump, but what has increased and by how much? So here are the stats, In the last 12 months to April 2026 diesel prices have jumped 91.3% and petrol rose 30.1%.

Ouch! 🙁

SPOTLIGHT

School certificate and UE, followed by NCEA and now the New Zealand Certificate Of Education. Is this the right direction for a world that is increasingly being shaped by AI and requires more and more adaptability?

SPORTIFY

Sport is a tough gig when you’re at the top of your game.

The Wahs lost in form Tanah Boyd early in the match against the Broncos, while All Blacks hopeful Caleb Tongitau suffered a season ending ruptured Achilles.

Thankfully, we’re safely tucked in behind our desks here at Perriams.

TOPICAL

Our police are after an increase in their pay packet, so what’s the problem? Unless you want to be on the frontline or in the midst of a domestic dispute why can’t our government just say yes and move on, otherwise more police will be moving on.

OPINION

Horrible statistic, if you caught the Christchurch Press article over the weekend.

Deaths on South Island roads: 2200 deaths, 17500 serious injuries and 51000 minor injuries spanning 25 years.

That is not a stat we should be proud of. Is it our roads? Is it our impatience? What is it?

THE MARKETS

Just an indication as to how tough it is out there. When The Warehouse have come out saying trading conditions are expected to remain challenging with inflationary pressures, global instability and an uncertain domestic economy. Doesn’t bode well for all those other retailers given where The Warehouse sits in the market place.

PERRIAMS POWER RANKINGS – 18 May 2026

Each week we announce Perriams “Game Changers” for the week.

1. Auckland FC a home final in Auckland against Sydney. Just how good is that! Look out rugby!

2. The Wahs wollop the Broncos in Brisbane on magic round. Now sitting at second on the NRL table.

3. The former All Blacks behind the bold plan to save Moana Pasifika. Clear any and all road blocks and back them, they obviously have the funds behind them.

Ready to sow the first seed? Let's talk!
