Perriams Pacesetter – 25 May 2026

Blog 25th May 2026

Every Monday we post some thoughts in our Perriams Pacesetter, containing fresh thoughts for the week, the weekend just gone, and a bit of left field. Click below to read.

GEM

Auckland FC are the A – League champions. Who else and what else would be our GEM of the week? 😊

And it was only their second year in the competition!

OF INTEREST

A NZ Herald Survey – Should St John be fully funded by the NZ Government?

91% of those surveyed said yes, so what happened to majority rules? In fact, it’s not even majority it’s a toweling.

So why can’t we see this in one of the party’s election manifestos?

SPOTLIGHT

The Governments bold decision to disestablish 8,700 civil servant positions. Bold, yes, but you must applaud this from National. Tough decisions have to be made but this was only an announcement, that’s the easy part, so it’s time to execute.

SPORTIFY

What the? Auckland Grammer Mardi Cup crew of 40 years ago sought to have their bid to reopen the final result against Christ College reviewed – Yeah Right!

TOPICAL

“Land deal of the century” is what the media are saying in regard to what Wolfbrook paid for Pegasus Golf Course.

Let’s hope all unsecured creditors were paid first, and in full, otherwise the liquidator should be in the firing line for selling so cheaply.

OPINION

With what’s happening in the Middle East and other parts of the world could NZ be seen as a safe destination and if so, might this keep our economy going whilst we grapple with the fuel crisis? People will still travel!

QUESTION OF THE WEEK?

We have been in and out of recession for most of the past 5 years, we are borrowing money everyday to maintain a lifestyle we can’t afford, and our NZ interest bill is now the Governments fourth biggest cost.

So, my question to you is, what are we going to do?

THE MARKETS

Our NZ sharemarket is down 4% for the year to date. Yet we got Dow Jones and this has just reached a new all-time high despite all the uncertainty that is out there.

OCR 2.25% ↓ November 2025 CPI 3.1% ↑ January 2026 Unemployment 5.4% ↑ December 2025 House Price Movement 2.3% ↑ July 2024 Rent Price Movement 4.3% ↑ July 2024

Only 214 days to go until Christmas!

PERRIAMS POWER RANKINGS – 25 May 2026

Each week we announce Perriams “Game Changers” for the week.

  1. Auckland FC’s win over Sydney FC in the grand final of the A – League football with 28,000 people packing out Mt Smart stadium!
  2. The Crusaders win over the Chiefs. This was a nail biter! A good old ding dong between one of the greatest Super Rugby rivals and The Crusaders came out the victors!
  3. Sam Ruthe gives up on the Commonwealth Games due to a slower return to competition because of his previous stress fracture. We will have to wait a little longer before NZ can see what this Gem can do on the world stage. And remember he is only 17!
